Kultivat Assist — if someone is helping you

Kultivat Assist lets a person you trust see your screen and help you. In development; Linux first.

You are always in control. Nothing happens without your clear yes, and you can end it with one click.

How a session goes

  1. Start Kultivat Assist. You see a short ID and a code.
  2. Tell your helper the ID and the code — by phone or message.
  3. A question appears: "Name wants to see your screen." Press Allow if you expect this person; press Decline if you do not. (If in doubt, decline and phone them.)
  4. While they are connected, a bar at the top of your screen says so. Press End on that bar at any time and the session stops immediately.

Things you can do

  • Chat with the helper in the Assist window.
  • Send a file to them with Send file…. You choose the file.
  • View only: the helper can look but cannot click or type.
  • When the helper wants to send you a file, you are asked first. Received files go into your Downloads folder and never overwrite anything.
  • When they send you text to copy, you press the button to copy it yourself; nothing is typed behind your back.

Staying connected for later

Your helper may ask "Allow this person to connect without asking in the future?" Choose No unless you know them well. If you say yes, that person can connect whenever the computer is on and you are logged in — the bar still shows. You can withdraw the permission by deleting the file named paired in Assist's data folder (ask your helper to show you; a settings button is planned).

Good to know

  • The code works once and expires after ten minutes.
  • The helper cannot see your passwords unless they are on the screen, so close what you do not want seen before you start.
  • Closing the Assist window can leave it running in the background (tray icon), ready for next time.
  • Never give your ID and code to someone who called you unexpectedly. Real helpers wait for you to ask.
